The Island of Juan Fernandez located 667 Km of the coast of Chile was devastated in the morning of the 27th of February 2010 by a powerful tsunami detonated by a 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the coast of Chile. The island has a population of approximately 600 people (mostly fisherman). Three waves hit Cumberland Bay, were the city was built and destroyed everything that stood below a 15-meter line, carrying with it the school, gymnasium, municipality, church, houses, businesses, cars... and everything built on the flatland.
11 People died and some other 6 are still missing, this is a small number considering it was a Friday night and the island is a growing touristic spot. Fortunately the only discotheque in the island didn't open that night; many people sleeping in their homes found them floating in the middle of the bay. Each testimony of the survivors is more horrifying than the other.
Help and provisions have arrived to the island, and the reconstruction has slowly begun with the removal of rubble; this is the first step on a long road to reconstruction of an urban paradise in the middle of the ocean.
