Water is scarce in eastern Chad, and the influx of 250,000 Darfuri refugees to the region has often been the subject of disputes between locals and the refugees. Each year the rainy season seems to be shorter and shorter, as the desert continues to advance. The new high density of population has depleted wood sources, contributing to the desertification of the area which in turn contributes to the increasingly arid climate.
